    Notes
    • The Story of William Guilford Lee, Third Child of Elisha Guilford Lee and Elizabeth Israel

[William Guilford Lee was] born on his parents’ farm in Coshocton, Ohio, Jan. 23, 1816. [He] was a [doctor] and a lawyer. [He was] a trustee of Baughman Township, Wayne Co., Ohio, 1839-40. In the fore part of 1844 he moved with his wife and family (married 1837) from Ohio to Oskaloosa, Iowa, which had been gotten from the Indians shortly before. He was a very successful physician in Iowa before 1849.

From Phillips’ book “Mahaska Co. A Story of the Early Days” [Semira Ann Hobbs Phillips, Proud Mahaska: 1843-1900]: “The first sermon preached by a Methodist in Oskaloosa was on Sunday, September 29th, 1844. Allen Johnson was the preacher. He announced at that meeting that he would on October 13th, hold a meeting…[and that day] Brother William G. Lee led the singing…. Some twelve or fourteen persons then formed the little band which constituted the beginning of the Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. Among those who that day gave their letter…were Dr. William G. Lee and wife…”

Lee came from Oskaloosa to California with his brothers Elisha M. and Chauncey H., his wife and children, and two single men, in three ox-drawn wagons. They were part of hundred-wagon train that left the latter part of April 1849. Dr. Lee was the physician of the emigrant train. After they crossed the Des Moines River (100 miles in one month) the unwieldy train was divided.

The Lees’ section arrived in Hangtown (Placerville, Calif.) on Oct. 5, 1849. They mined and then set up a merchandising business. The store burned completely just two years after they landed in the Golden West. This store might have been in Coloma.

William moved to Sonoma County, where he was a charter member and the Worshipful Master of Lafayette Lodge No. 126 F. & A.M., organized under dispensation Jan. 8, 1858, at Pleasant Hill, some two and a half miles from Sebastopol. He was also County Superintendent of Schools at Santa Rosa (term expired Oct. 1859). His wife died that May. He spent two years in Nevada during the Washoe Excitement (’62-’63). He was elected to the last territorial council of Nevada and was also a member of the first legislature after it became a state. He remarried in Oct. 1871
